Syria has been a secular arab nationalist held government for decades, since 1954 pretty much. One of the Assad's is it's de jure leader.

Iraq wasn't turned into a Islamist state until the US invaded, Iran was turned into a Islamic state as a result of backlash against the US supported Shah, Egypt is a military dictatorship, Jordan is a somewhat secular kingdom, Afghanistan was socialist and Soviet aligned until the US helped kick off the Afghan civil war, you get the picture.

If Islamism is a cancer, US involvement is a carcinogen.

Non-Muslims are second class denizens, they don't even have voting rights, and disproportionately many of them began the first riots in the country in 2011.
