Yes. Because both ideas are stupid. We are using the internet. (1) How can you tell if someone is or isn't a certain nationality/ethnicity? (2) And does it even matter?

(1) I think that if you can't check passports, then there is no reason to insist on something so ridiculous. If you view the world in terms of nationalities then I think you have a 20th century mindset.

For the British league: What defines the prerequisite Britishness? A passport stamp? British blood? British culture? If you insist on a stamp, you are stupid. If you insist on blood and culture (ie, ethnicity), you are 'racist'. If you say it is a British league and allow anyone who wishes to self-identify as 'British' to join in an open and free way, you have something that works. This is the heart of the issue for me. Once I realized your British league wanted to check passports, I didn't want to play in such a closed league. But I had already started a discussion on the matter, so I finished the discussion knowing I would refuse to join if I had somehow proven my previously rejected Britishness, whatever that may be.

For the French cup: The initial post never said 'French passports only'. With time, the French cup added prerequisites: Quebecois are acceptable. Only French citizens and Quebecois we know are acceptable. Great French-language skills are enough. It is a French and Non-French French Cup masquerading as a strictly French Cup. And this is fine. I'm sure they will all have fun. But why insist on rules that change or have exceptions? Just call it what it is: Francophone Cup. But since they already have a Francophone League, most prefer to avoid a discussion, and some prefer to insult me (have you read what some of the patient French have written?).

If I look bad for questioning things I find contradictory or ridiculous on a website full of teenagers using stupid language and non-words, (gl hf, gg, bg, :/, 3v3 instead of 3vs3, etc.), I don't mind much. But if you want to stand up and fight (a) for restrictions you have no way to control (how hard is it to use an old account and pose as a Brit or French player and be accepted with open arms?) or (b) for a strictly nationalist worldview, then I think there is a problem. How do you define the root word of 'nationality'? Does 'nation' refer to an ethnic group (as in nation-state) or citizenship (as in What nationality are you?)? The one is the 19th century idea of nationalism, the other is a 20th century idea. But we are in the 21st century and both ideas still exist.

(2) If you can't define the word 'nation' properly, why does any of this matter? If you want to check passports without the ability to check passports, why insist on something that shouldn't matter to begin with?

It is the internet. People are open and free. Let them self-identify as they wish, so long as they fit in. I think people look bad for insisting on a passport stamp in an age of mixed ethnicities and dual citizenship when there is no way to know the man behind the computer.

In any case, questioning the logic and philosophy behind these national leagues is far more interesting than anything else this forum offers.

I am glad you have explained yourself fully.I got the gist of the argument through my little skill of French and the translator app am using on firefox. I do understand it is tough to determine citizen but I thought this events were symbolic so as to get closer ties to people who live near you perhaps even have a meet-up or talk in the local dialect, slang, pop culture and language.I guess since that never happened it's unlikely to happen in the french one too.I did notice there were a few quebecers in it and they said they were.I do believe it should be extended to francophones especially since most francophones come from france's old colonial territories so that's french enough and Francophones are easier to monitor.

I find it odd you accused me of living in the 20th century considering i was born at the end of the 20th century and any memory of living in the 20th century i have forgotten. The world is more global maybe francophone is the way. However gui I do think if they don't want you to join you should probably stop no matter how just your argument is.

I never asked to join. And it seems any semblance of a conversation died a few days ago. I am satisfied with the trickle of indirect responses they provided. And they just want to speak French and have fun playing games with people in a league called French Cup, even if the rules for joining are ambiguous, ever changing or contradictory.
