Bro, if you can't be bothered to click on a nice little button titled "Surrender" when you know I have a game in the bag, then you are turning your problem into my problem, and that's irking.

See, here's the problem: It's very subjective as to when you're "guaranteed to win". You can make educated guesses about the other guy's strength, but with fog, you can't know for certain what the other player has up their sleeve. A player who happens to be losing at the moment should be able to play the game out a few more turns without getting flak for it.

I usually wait to say gg until an opponent surrenders unless the game is well fought by both sides, then I say it as an acknowledgment of the skill. But in those cases I make mention of the enjoyment of the game.

If Im losing and my opponent says gg before I surrender I take it as being arrogant. I may be losing but I like to give it a few turns to be safe. No point surrendering if my chances if success are still relavent to some degree.

But if my opponent says gg as in it was a well fought game then I will usually return the gesture.

I suppose saying gg depends on context and delivery.

I think saying gg after the game is over is totally fine, but saying it before the game even ends insults my PRIDE

I'm not talking about taking guesses, I'm talking about a player who literally has no chance of winning, waiting until the last minute to take his turn. Saying "gg" to people like this is saying too much. They should be thankful I acknowledge their skill, instead of saying "give up, you stalling ass."

wow, I would never guess so many people would be insulted/annoyed/pissed by someone saying "gg"... now I know why some people never give up even when the game is completely/clearly/unquestionable finished!!!

what can I say?!
SORRY all, my mistake! please believe me, it wasn't intentional...

I usually take gg before the game ends to mean the opponent is about to surrender, and after the game to mean a compliment of my skill or the general enjoyment of the game.

If you say gg and then don't surrender I generally feel that means they are saying they are enjoying and appreciating the game.

If I've been chatting with a player and they say gg whilst I'm being crushed I never take that as an insult, it's always hard to say when a player isn't talkative though, I often just assume their English is poor.

If you're saying gg because you expect me to surrender then you're just being a jerk, and the problem is your end... If you don't have time to finish the game then don't play :P

That's a good example, I think sometimes crafty players who are losing try and use "gg?" to try and goad their opponent into surrendering, or put you off by making you think they have a stronger position than they do. I've seen this happen a lot to me especially when I was low level, I even surrendered a couple of times until I cottoned on to it...

It's gamesmanship and metagaming...

To me 'gg' is a reflection on the game. Typically I either say it after the game as general courtesy, or when I think I've lost (and I think back to the random game recently where I said it and then It turned out I won anyway...). I think you're asking the wrong question, whether it is insulting or not, but the question should be when/why can it be insulting? Telling your opponent to quit the game - that would cut deep especially in fog as mentioned above. I personally like to know that I was a respected opponent, even if I lost. I think we as payers should simply ignore the insulting people, maybe blacklist them, but definitely keep in mind that for every uncourteous player there is a multitude of respectful ones.

Definitions of words are derived from the way they are generally understood. If we choose to define 'gg' as offensive, so it will be, and we won't be able to be changed back. If I remember right, 'gay' used to mean 'happy'. And now look at what happened to it. The offense is in your head. Choose to not be offended, and it will not be. Be offended, and it will be. The choice is up to you as an individual, and for the sake of the Warlight community I hope you choose wisely.

I never say gg, this is often seen arrogantly, but sometimes I say gg? and it puts a quicker end to a game - maybe they'll try some different tactics for 2 turns, but after that, most players, if unsuccessful, will go ahead and surrender.

A common courtesy that is not necessary, mind you. I don't mind being asked gg? either, but then what I said above... Seriously I reckon that the only decider here is personal opinion.

gg isn't changing in meaning, it's just being used sarcastically, in the same way "Thanks..." can be used. The meaning isn't changed, just the intention behind it.

a bit of a problem knowing when the intention is one or the other just by reading a really short text message, like "gg"... so I always went for the clear meaning, "good game" or "great game", when I few the game is over, no matter who is winning... I'm not asking for surrender nor been sarcastically or nothing... when I want to be sarcastically I put more hints on the text to make myself understood... when I want a surrender I ask it plainly!!!!!
anyway, people are quite easy to get offended... I guess Froid (or whatever his name is spelled) has a explanation for it ;)

I won't get offended by that.

Don't forget we have players all over the world. Something which is deemed rude in one culture may be perfectly fine in another.
I would say just take it easy, pals. It simply means "good game".
We can't generalize what one really means in this situation. Speak your mind if you think your player might mean something else.

I think we just need to learn to respect different cultures and don't over-interpret/overreact. :-)

I personally am happy to say it or receive it at any point a game is decided, if the game has been good. Winning or losing. Usually the game ends about two turns later. And why should I take offense? Sure, I don't always agree the game is over when someone declares a "GG" but that doesn't mean I am irritated with them, just that maybe they're reading the board differently than me. If the game has been good, I'm happy to send it back even if I think the game is about to turn around. Let them think what they want. I cannot understand why it is offensive to say "I think this game is concluded, but it was a good one" and I don't see the point in playing a game that both sides know is already over, particularly considering how (often rightfully) frustrated people seem to get when a decided game drags on unnecessarily long.
