I'm up too late watching the launch of 1.0 (congratulations! btw). Currently the ladder on the dashboard is empty. How much time does it take to calculate? How frequently is it updated?

It supposedly updates every 6 hours starting midnight........so what time zone is that based on? because it doesn't seem to be US Eastern as I assumed

would it be that difficult to have the game auto-update ladder ranks/games???

not that it matters to me much, I'.. be at the bottom :)

The ladder updates once every 6 hours on the schedule of midnight, 6am, noon, and 6pm (all times are GMT).

This means the next one is in 30 minutes.

Perrin: That particular phrase just refers to the Dashboard page updating, not the ladder.

This weekend I plan to manually force the ladder to update more often, since it's new and everyone is watching it. :)

but would auto-update whenever a game finishes be an option? or would it slow servers too much?

I tested the ladder with several hundred players and updates took almost an hour to complete. This is the problem with updating after every game - it would be basically updating continuously which would cause a lot of server load.

Right now the ladder is small and updates just take a few seconds, so I plan to update it often. I can adjust the automatic update frequency up or down depending on how big the ladder gets over the coming months.

Actually I'm thinking now it may make sense to de-couple the "create new games" part of the ladder from the "update ratings and rankings" part.

It could check for new games, say, every 1-2 hours and only update the ratings every 6, since updating the ratings is the slow part.

I should have thought of this sooner.

Fizzer, i used that link to show what time it was GMT, and the updated every 10 minutes to show that it was up to date your time ;)

Fizzer, is the slow part of the ratings calculation the fact that you have it adjusting people's ratings based on how their opponents do in the future? I know there was some discussion about possibly removing this part of the calculation down the line. Would that perhaps enable an immediate rating update after games complete? I believe it would then be a very simple calculation involving only those two players.
