Description

Art by Pharaoh, Names by Thulk and Lord Cedric Aegus.

This is a map of Westeros and the Free Cities of Essos set roughly at the start of the ASOIAF series.

Features:
-Income is focused around holding cities and castles

-You will recieve a bonus for every capital (hexagons/octagon in western continent) and castle (pentagons in western continent) combination you hold that are in the same regional bonus. There are no capital bonuses for Essos (eastern continent).

-There are high value territories that are hard to defend in the middle of Westeros

-There is an option to have negative income pentalties for crossing into deepwater territories (the larger ships). You can also set positive income for the players that control Iron Islands/Oldtown, allowing those players to cross deepwaters without any penalty. (Advised to use abandon card with 0.01 multiplier with this feature.)

-The Vale regional bonus has two versions

-There are optional White Walker bonuses up north

-2 optional Essos superbonuses exist

Wow...just wow! This is an incredible map. Making the cities worth so much more than the surrounding terrain forces players to completely change their normal strategies. It keeps the game fresh for much longer, preventing that sense of the inevitable as early as it normally does. I still felt like I was fighting for my life just 5 turns before I won. Wow.

I am thrilled that we have several Ice and Fire maps that are so varied. Great work!

PS - there are a couple of broken connections in the western Riverlands and in the North Stony Shore Highlands should connect to The Twin Lakes.
Response by map creator Dameon on 6/19/2014
You'll be even more thrilled to know that there I've met 2 other people who are also making a map based on the Ice and Fire series. I'm glad you liked the focus on the cities. It was meant to be more accurate to the lore.

Thanks for pointing out the broken connection, it's fixed now :)

Great Map! Have you thought of giving the Free Cities "areas of influence" so they can be more powerful like the Westeros houses?
Response by map creator Dameon on 11/6/2014
I have considered it. The idea behind Essos (eastern continent) was that there are a lot fewer starting locations, which would lead to less players controlling more area compared to westeros.

The majority of power in Essos should be from the Free Cities, but I couldn't make them too powerful or 1 player can get a large advantage very early on if they held 2 cities (especially with convenient coastal territories).

I'm not sure if it's perfectly balanced as it is right now but at least it should feel different playing on Essos compared to Westeros :)

edit: After 5 months, yes "areas of influence" for Essos if finally added!

Great map! Mountain ranges, naval routes, bonuses that work on different scales and very true to the ASOIAF lore, make it a very deep map. The only reason I thought about giing it 4/5 because the game took 14 turns longer than necessary simply because there is a linear path in the very high north. I ended up with 14.000 armies there. But there's probably a reason for that which I don't understand.
Response by map creator Dameon on 10/5/2014
I'm glad you enjoyed the map! When you reach lvl 15, you are able to customize territory bonuses and then you can have an ai player start form the linear path to simulate the white walkers. I wanted that to be an optional aspect of the map so by default there will be no income from the linear path :)

Wonderful map, very challenging play against 3 AIs. Everyone starts off with 30 plus armies, by move 6 I already had more than 130 armies: this map skips the starting phase and goes straight into the heat of the battle. The high risk strategy of going for the big bonuses seems to pay off, though when even the weakest AI pops a cool 100 armies against you when you least expect it, strategic thinking is a must.
Despite the huge size of the map, the game doesn't require many moves (I finished a first play-through in 20 moves), but that doesn't mean it's a quick play: it took the best part of four hours. The lay-out is really well-thought out, with plenty of choke points, no tedious long one-step-at-a-time passages and clever links.
I found one broken connection: Mole Town to Last River's Headwaters.
Response by map creator Dameon on 6/19/2014
I've never tested with only 3 AI's before, so I'm surprised to hear it played as well as it did! Thanks for spotting the broken connection, fixed now :)

This is one of the best maps, period. So well designed, very accurate and detailed, and, in games I have played, quite balanced. Love it.

Had a long lot of fun playing this map, would of been 5 stars but the top part of the map isn't completely understandable in my part..?
Great balance of power and really good concept.
Response by map creator Dameon on 12/12/2014
The top part of the map's for custom scenarios with the white walker threat. There are income bonuses that you can change to give someone starting at the top some income. It's completely optional though.

Many a thanks oh ye Master Dameon. This map is incredible, there is an awesome amount of detail. I just finished my first game on this map (8 player; player chosen capitals) and was able to pull off a win in 56 turns. I like your reasoning about balancing powers between Essos and Westeros...however, a few of my friends did not do their due diligence on the bonuses and 3 of them started in Essos which really screwed them (haha). I would really like to know your opinion on Storm's End's bonus as it is geographically the closest city to King's Landing and also vulnerable to Essos attackers. Do these factors meant to balance each other out? I would also like to know your rationale in the Vale and its bonuses as it seems to be very weak compared other Westeros houses and very vulnerable to Essos as well? Thanks again man! A very enjoyable map.

very tricky to play, hard to keep track of armies in later stages of the game. easy to miss big score points, you've got to be on your toes.

Played this against AI's, and I enjoyed it a lot. It looked daunting at first but the bonuses racking up helps to organise defenses in key positions. There are lots of holes to plug up and when you make a mistake it is punishing. I guess the enemies awoke the Dragon, because I managed to beat it. Good map, thanks!

I have recently been reading the Song of Ice and Fire series and was pleasantly surprised to find a map resembling that world. It has a high level of immersion with the capital system. In other maps, you have to take a group of territories to receive further support. However, the creator of this map added capitals and castles which you can conquer. This new approach is very interesting as it adds to a level of importance to one simple piece of land. I recommend this to anyone interested in the Song of Ice and Fire series, or those looking for interesting tactics. This is a must use because... winter is coming.

I absolutely loved this map, because I personally, am a HUGE fan of the Game of Thrones and A Song of Ice and Fire series. It was fun and very, very intricate. The only problem I had with it was that it was a bit too intricate for my taste. I had to zoom in two times to be able to click on some of the lands and castles. I think this map is for very advanced players. That being said, it was still fun and the problem I had with it was easily fixable, and was a mere inconvenience and was easily fixable. Overall, I give this map a 8.5/10.

Possibly the best GOT map. It is a bit unbalanced though.

The average army yield per territory/city in the kingdoms: North 1.36, Iron Islands 1.58, Riverlands 1.23, Westerlands 1.51, Reach 1.20, Dorne 1.35, Stormlands 1.44, Crownlands 1.63, Vale (w/ islands) 1.31.

The Crownlands have the highest avg army value per territory, partly due to the value of King's Landing which is far higher than any other city's. King's Landing needs to come down to a 10 or preferably an 8. This will bring down the avg army value per territory/city from 1.63 to a more reasonable 1.50.

On the flip side, the Riverlands and Reach are very challenging. Starting in the Reach is practically useless (and I don't think it is easily fixable).

In the Westeros distribution, players starting on the east coast have a tremendous advantage because they can reach the high-value coastal cities of Essos. The same for all-cities distribution if one gets 1-2 big cities in Essos. I would reduce the 10s of most (all?) Essos cities to 6s or 8s.
