I know I shouldn't give him attention, but I was actually curious of that question so I asked my Taiwanese friend and did some research (they speak Mandarin, but she knows some Cantonese and the name is used across much of east Asia). So anyways, according to her it depends largely on the context and the tone (Mandarin and Cantonese are a tonal langauge much like Thai and Khmer, something Western languages generally lack). It can be anything from a shorter form of a Western name such as Linda (they're popular in many Asian countries) to having a deeper philisophical meaning such as strong or steady, but can also refer to trees or plants like the lotus. As for my friend, she said it's a lucky name so lots of girls get it when they're born.
