hhh is a bit odd in one respect: his style allows him to beat the best on a consistent basis (at a rate of about 70-80%); but he loses to a lot more mediocre/above average players on the ladder than other great players might (eg, zaeban is more consistent against mediocre/above average players but is more likely to be outplayed if the game is even after turn 5). in RRs he dominates.
apparently ace has improved quite a bit lately. playing him now is not the same as before.
zibik is a bit more gutsy than others. yet he has won about 24 1v1 tournaments (RRs with the best, double- & single-eliminations).
4 other great 1v1 players i forgot to mention: mian (he whupped me a lot when i was trying to improve my 1v1 game), retro (i've had his number our last few games), rubik (still not sure how good he really is - he might be the next best), and monsehnor (i'd say we are more or less equals at 1v1s). if i left anyone out, it's probably bc i havent played them 4+ times yet.
perrin, who are the best 5-10 1v1 players of the so-called old guard?

sadly, I am not of the old guard, I was a noob when they were playing regularly, and ended up only playing them in ffa's, never knowing their true skill too much..
I can only name maybe a dozen of them at all..
Pinkbladder
Ruthless
Troll
Duke
Fizzer *obviously*
Grundie
Eitz

on your first turn you attacked west africa and deployed in both of your other bonuses. you really need to limit your focus at the beginning of the game.

I think I have(without actually checking) close to 20 1v1's with John Tack. I believe we're pretty close to being exactly even on wins. Although two(maybe three, I forget) of his were from booting me cause I forgot I was playing warlight. He always waited a reasonable amount of time before booting however. I'm just pretty forgetful when it comes to remembering real time games~

He was probably one of the first 20 players or so, and he was very good at the game. Played the hell out of it constantly for a year and then quit suddenly, classic burnout it seems :)
