Small Earth Promotion/Relegation League: Season 17: 10/27/2019 09:52:03

I want to begin a discussion on what players would like to see for next season. As far as new players joining the league, it takes a long time to promote up the ranks to the top groups using the current promotion/group format.

What happens currently:
1. Groups are linear from A-G, with no double promotions given by default. So assuming no dropouts, the best case scenario for a new player to reach group A is to promote each season for 6 consecutive seasons! This could take more than a year at the current rate, which is too long.

Suggestions:
1. Change promotion format. Winner of a group automatically receives a double promotion, with the next 3 players (2nd-4th) receiving a regular promotion. The basic change will be in the number of promotions/relegations. In this case, 4 players would relegate from each group, and 4 players would promote (increased from 3 each). This way, a player could climb from Group G to Group E, then to Group C, then Group A, meaning 3 seasons only would be required to reach Group A level.

2. Change the Group format. Basically, there would be a premier Group (Group A, which I would increase to 12 players rather than 10), with 2 Group Bs, 3 Group Cs, etc. With our current player number at 90, that means 12 Group As, 20 Group Bs, 30 Group Cs, and the rest in Group D. This means less climbing is needed to reach the top level, but would limit the actual number of promotions, as each higher division has a smaller playing group.

Example scenario: Group A (12 players rather than 10) would have 6 relegation spots, meaning it is harder for players to remain there (they would have to finish in the top 6), and the top 3 in each "B" group would auto-promote. Each "B" Group would have 4 relegation spots (plus a play-off relegation slot between the 6th placed finishers), meaning 9 players from the C groups would be able to promote. (top 3 in each group). Group Ds would promote 3 from each group, with 3 relegations needed from each C Group.

Just realised I made some mistakes in the example scenario, so I corrected it. Take another look now.

@Rheumakay, I've been thinking about that. Probably the easiest thing there would be to drop the half-points for a win in Group E, and leave it the same otherwise. (Assuming option 2 is the road we go down)

Yeah I'm a fan of option 2. If we went with option 1, it would cause more confusion and I don't think that the best players would always be in the higher tier groups due to the volatility of groups.

@adamg5, you are welcome to join the league, but this season has already started, so you will be added to the waitlist for next season if you want to play.

Season 17: Update #1 (October 28th)

Season 17 is underway! All groups have started, so let's take our first look at how things are going!

Group A: 10 players
iNsAnE (1-0)
Suschel (1-1)
GuestNWHSzY (0-1)
huddyj (0-0)
Rheumakay (0-0)
dauti (0-0)
PhucilliJerry (0-0)
Ragnar Lothbrok (0-0)
ADHDnl (0-0)
graemes (0-0)

iNsAnE defeats Suschel, while Suschel defeats Guest. The premier group is underway, with iNsAnE and Suschel looking to both improve on their personal best results of league runner up with victory this season. Of course, I will be looking to go back-to-back after winning in Season 16! ADHDnl is the only first-timer in Group A this season, and he beat me in the restart a few months ago! Competition is going to be tough once again!

Group B: 10 players
Hunta (3-1)
KaitoS (2-1)
SNDBX (2-2)
k.o. (1-0)
Ameter (1-1)
Meldarion (1-2)
rocky1 (1-4)
ARand0mPlayer (0-0)
bzox (0-0)
Baer (0-0)

Group B looks to be tough, with only k.o sitting undefeated out of those players who have completed at least one game. After losing to rocky1 last season, k.o. will be very happy to have the win against him this time around! Hunta leads the group so far, with 3 wins. After missing out on a promotion to Group A only on H2H last season, he will be eager to do well here! KaitoS is off to a good start after getting a double promotion last season, with 2 wins from 3 games so far.

Group C: 9 players
Checkmqte (0-0)
Tof (0-0)
Fc Bayern (0-0)
kirdol (0-0)
Diestramenos (0-0)
Thorben (0-0)
jac (0-0)
Cata Cauda (0-0)
Matt431 (0-0)

Genius failed to join Group C, so we have just 9 players here. No completed games yet.

Group D: 9 players
koso (2-0)
BlacKnight (1-0)
Brian the Brave (1-2)
Tainted Monk (0-1)
ZZA (0-1)
Hasdrubal (0-0)
Kevin Turner (0-0)
Lew (0-0)
Hazelnut (0-0)

Taji pulled out of Group D, so this group is also down to 9 players. koso has started well, beating TM and Brian. BlacKnight also beat Brian, while Brian is on the board with a win over ZZA. Should be some tough competition here, with the top players from last season's expansion groups battling it out for a chance to promote again!

Group E: 10 players
Hergul (3-0)
mslasm (1-0)
Andre Laufmöller (1-1)
tris (1-3)
Octane (0-2)
s1gmoyd (0-0)
{101st} Syphen (0-0)
Menda (0-0)
hi (0-0)
Viking1007 (0-0)

Hergul and mslasm are my tips for the players to beat in Group E. Hergul only lost 2 games last season, which was just enough to miss the double promotion, while mslasm booted out of Group B, and should bounce back strongly. Hergul has so far beaten Andre, tris, and Octane, while mslasm has a win against tris. Andre also beat tris, and tris beat Octane.

Group F: 10 players
Fizzer (4-0)
Roele (3-0)
roan (3-2)
Not Hitler (2-0)
Star-Lord (2-1)
Boakill (2-4)
888 (1-5)
BST (0-5)
Linws2 (0-0)
(Teishi) mōshiwakearimasen min'na (0-0)

Fizzer is off to a strong start in Group F, after narrowly missing a promotion last season though tie-breaks. He has a win over roan, and both he and Roele have also beaten Boakill, 888, and BST. Not Hitler beat 888 and BST, roan beat 888, Boakill, and Star-Lord, while Star-Lord has wins over Boakill and 888. Boakill beat 888 and BST, and 888 beat BST.

Group G1: (10 players)
jimmy (6-0)
Aaariel (2-2)
Saleen147 (2-2)
sunsetslimited (1-1)
Andy Howard (1-2)
Captain Trips (0-1)
Exile (0-1)
Dianne Abrams (0-3)
krinid (0-0)
Kwame (0-0)

jimmy is the clear leader in Group G1, with 6 wins over Aariel, Saleen, sunsetslimited, Andy Howard, Exile, and Dianne. Aariel, Saleen, and Andy Howard have split the results against each other, while Aariel and Saleen have wins over Dianne as well. sunsetslimited beat Captain Trips in the other completed game.

Group G2: (10 players)
(chaos) I stabbed the lord and got chat-banned (5-0)
DrApe (4-1)
Savania (2-2)
Arth (1-0)
optism (1-1)
Nekschot (1-2)
LMJ (1-5)
battlebot (0-4)
Lena (0-0)
Serpens Solidus (0-0)

chaos is off to a great start, with wins over DrApe, Savania, Nekschot, LMJ, and battlebot. DrApe sits second, winning against Savania, optism, LMJ, and battlebot. Savania has beaten Nekschot and LMJ, Arth and Nekschot beat LMJ, and optism and LMJ beat battlebot.

Group G3: (10 players)
Glass (8-0)
Kryger (6-1)
Dummy (4-2)
Blindigo (2-2)
RAS (2-3)
the Bloody-Nine (2-3)
Kris (0-2)
swiekr (0-5)
riskboy88 (0-6)
Matthew (0-0)

Glass has all but won Group G3 already, with 8 wins and just one game left to play, which is against Matthew. Kryger has yet to play Matthew or the Bloody-Nine, but has won against everyone else except Glass, and is looking strong for 2nd place so far. Dummy has only lost to those two, with games against Matthew, Blindingo, and Kris left to play. Blindingo has also only lost to Glass and Kryger, so that match with Dummy could be crucial for final standings. swiekr and riskboy are in trouble with a lot of losses each and still searching for a win!

I like a pyramid system, the like:
1 A with 4 relegations (6 is too much. If you relegate a mid A player, most likely you are relegating players way stronger then the ones being promoted)
2 Bs with 2+2 promotions and 2+2 relegations
4 Cs with 1x4 promotions and a number of relegations depending on D size
(a variant may be to have 3+3 relegations from B and have the 2 best seconds promoting from C)

Edit: nice to implement is a rebalancing of B and C groups each season, splitting the best non promoted performers. This to ensure that groups are evenly balanced.

Hergul has good idea, but I have little better.
12 players each group
1 A with 4 relegations
2 Bs with 2+2 promotions and 3+3 relegations
3 Cs with 2+2+2 promotions and 3+3+3 relegations
x Ds with a total of 9 promotions

0 double-promotions
if someone drops out, the best results of 3rd in B and 4th of C will also promote as lucky losers

Thank you to all who have responded to my post about the plans to change the group format. Thank you to Hergul for initially contacting me with some improvement suggestions. I think Lew's idea is a slightly better version of my "Option 2", and so I will now give my proposition for next season's format. (some slight changes from Lew's idea, as I want to keep the group size to 10 players)

Proposal for Season 18: Maximum 10 players per group.
Group A (1 Group of 10 players)
1st-6th remain in Group A (6 players)
7th-10th relegate to Group B (4 players)

Group B (2 Groups of 10 players)
1st-2nd in each group promote to Group A (4 players)
3rd-7th in each group remain in Group B (10 players)
8th-10th in each group relegate to Group C (6 players)

Group C (3 Groups of 10 players)
1st-2nd in each group promote to Group B (6 players)
3rd-7th in each group remain in Group C (15 players)
8th-10th in each group relegate to Group D (9 players)

Group D (4 Groups, maximum 10 players per group, expansion group)
1st-2nd in each group promote to Group C (8 players)
3rd in each group (4 players) will play a single-elimination tournament, with the winner receiving the final Group C promotion
4th-10th will remain in Group D (up to 24 players)
