team a but why settle a fact with a game. The people who think it's hawaii is in north america have bad geography.Hey bluemonkey is french polynesia in europe because it's an external territory. Is pitcairn islands in europe because it is a external uk territory face facts hawai is in the same continent as australia and now you geography blunders go argue russia is in only one continent.

Some things which I'm missing in this thread:
- "Continent" (in its geopolitical meaning) is not well-defined; it will differ based on who you ask.
- "Continent" (in its geographical meaning) is much more clearly defined, but does run into practical issues (such as Iceland).
- The two meanings don't coincide, not perfectly at least.
- Most importantly, it doesn't even matter whether or not it's "correct" to call, for instance, Hawaii part of a "North America" bonus. What matters is gameplay. The reason you call the bonus "North America" is because it's a convenient, clear, short name which everyone will understand. Whether or not Hawaii is part of it is very clear because WL will use the appropriate colour to draw Hawaii.

Wow, people get REALLY hotted up about this Oceania vs North America debate, huh? Here is my opinion on the matter, guaranteed to be offensive: Who cares? Really, is this a big deal? Jaysus....

I agree with RvW, it's about playability. Decide on bonuses based upon what's best for actually playing the map rather than differring definitions of 'continent.' Certainly use them as guidelines but don't bind yourself to them. Gameplay comes first.

Okay, but whether it's implanted in the map or not:
Hawaii is an island (group) in the pacific ocean.
Islands in the pacific ocean are called Oceania.
Live with it.

1. Japan is not IN the pacific ocean, it borders it. It borders the sea of Japan on the western side.
2. The Galápagos are indeed part of Oceania.
3. The Aleutians are not IN the pacific ocean, they border it. They border the Bering sea on the northern side.

FYI:
|>The Aleutian Islands (English pronunciation: /əˈl(j)uːʃən/; possibly from Chukchi aliat, "island") are a chain of 14 large volcanic islands and 55 smaller ones[1] , forming part of the Aleutian Arc in the Northern Pacific Ocean,
Oh and:
|>Japan Listeni/dʒəˈpæn/ (Japanese: 日本 Nihon or Nippon; formally 日本国 About this sound Nippon-koku or Nihon-koku, literally the State of Japan) is an island nation in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean

And, the Aleutian and Japan **could** be exceptions, but Hawaii clearly lies in the middle of the ocean, not on the edge.

Moros, my point was that things aren't always so cut and dried. Simply because an island is in the Pacific does not mean that it is part of Oceania just as being a US state/territory does not ensure it is part of North America.
There is great ambiguity in all such things.
