It's true. Führer just means leader, as in Touristenführer for example. Should any of you ever come visit Germany, please make sure to always refer to your local tourist guide as "mein Führer".

sarcasm aside - yes it means "leader" but as far as i know (i'm not an expert on german history though) no previous leader of the country/empire was/wanted to be titled "fuehrer". There were a lot of other expressions in use, not this one though.

Sometimes people are being overly sensitive, some times they aren't. However, a good rule of thumb is to try and understand why people think what you're doing is offensive. If you really can't understand why, figure out if what you're doing is so important to you that it is worth offending people. If that is the case, you can move on with your life doing what you're doing, but you can't pretend you care about not offending people.

Also, explaining to offended parties why what you're doing is actually not offensive rarely works.
